How to ride buses in Okinawa
How to ride a bus in Okinawa
On some buses you pay when you get on (pay first); on others, when you get off (pay later).
Pay first or pay later?
- Pay when you get on (pay first): Naha Bus routes numbered below 20 (except 10 and 12)
- Pay when you get off (pay later): all other Naha Bus, Ryukyu Bus and Okinawa Bus routes
The route number is shown at the top of the front of the bus.On the Yanbaru Express Bus ("YKB" / "888" on the bus), you pay the fare on the bus.
Pay later: how to ride
- 01When you get on, take a numbered ticket (with OKICA, tap the card instead).
- 02Press the stop button before your stop.
- 03When you get off, put the fare and the ticket into the fare box (with OKICA, tap the reader on the fare box). No change is given, so change money on the bus while it is stopped.
On Naha Bus and Ryukyu Bus, the changer on the bus takes 1,000-yen notes and 500, 100 and 50-yen coins. It does not take 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000-yen notes, so have 1,000-yen notes or coins ready before you get on.

How to pay
Cash or OKICA (Suica, PASMO not accepted)
OKICA is the IC transit card for buses, the Yui Rail and taxis on Okinawa Island. Suica, PASMO and other IC cards from outside Okinawa cannot be used.
The Yanbaru Express Bus is the opposite: OKICA is not accepted, but you can pay with Suica or other IC cards, credit cards, PayPay or cash.
Buses in Okinawa can run late.
Riding the Yui Rail
Unlike the buses, the Yui Rail (monorail) accepts Suica and other IC transit cards, as well as OKICA and contactless credit cards.
Tickets from the station machines are QR-code tickets. Hold the QR code over the blue reader on the gate to enter, and again at your destination to exit, so keep it with you.
Contactless credit cards go on the pink reader in front of the gate. If your IC card balance is too low, the gate will not open; top up at the fare adjustment machine.
